A Northern Territory Police officer, who attempted to break up a fight involving a teenager at a house in Gray, was allegedly assaulted and sustained facial injuries, NT Police say.

NT Police said at around 9:40pm on Sunday, they responded to a physical altercation report involving two males. It was not clear what the altercation was about.

When they tried to break up the fight, a 17-year old male allegedly struck one of the officers to the head. It was not explained if the teenager used any weapon during the alleged assault.

The police officer suffered facial injuries. Acting Commander Sachin Sharma said the officer was not seriously injured.

The teenager was immediately arrested for the assault and taken to the Palmerston Watch House. It was not disclosed if the other male involved in the altercation was also arrested.

Commander Sharma said that this incident is unacceptable.

“Not many people leave their homes for work expecting to be assaulted in the course of their duties,” he said. “I commend our members for their collective work for quickly resolving the incident without further escalation.”

NT Police are continuing their investigation.
