The Northern Territory is adopting the national emergency warning system for cyclones, storms, floods, extreme heat, and bushfires, the Northern Territory Emergency Services has said.

NTES planning and preparedness command manager Gemma Bellenger said in a statement, the Australian Warning System aims to standardise information, and the calls to action for cyclones, storms, floods, extreme heat, and bushfires across three levels.

The advice level is represented by a yellow symbol, watch act level represented by orange, and the emergency level represented by red.

She said the national system was already used for bushfire and heatwave warnings in the NT.

Notices under the new system will include the warning level, location, type of hazard, and action statements, such as “stay informed”, “do not enter flood water”, or “evacuate now”.

“It’s important to have consistent messaging across all emergency services so that it’s really easy to understand, for not just Territorians but for people travelling in and out of other jurisdictions,” Ms Bellenger said.

The hazard warnings will be posted on the NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services, secure NT social media accounts and on the SecureNT website.
