I am fed up to the back teeth with mushy-minded couch potatoes with no knowledge or experience with crime remediation, who have watched TV accounts of various outback camp programmes for wayward teenagers, and who are so naïve they do not grasp that the story is for ratings and has nothing to do with rehabilitation.
Most of the journalists who run these feel-good shows are sociopathic and do not give a toss for the human consequences. The ABC’s coverage of the Don Dale saga was classic in this regard.
For the record. The first of these ventures was the NT’s Wildman River camps, peopled by kids who were unlikely to move on to heavier crime, but who did not improve in their behaviour one bit. I witnessed this first hand. All others interstate also were populated for success and produced no lasting success, but they seriously angered good kids who said “How come it is the bad kids who get all the breaks while we who toe the parental line get nothing.”
