The first four new F-35A Lightning ll fighter jets worth an estimated $78 million each landed at their new home at the RAAF Base Tindal in Katherine last week, that will be serviced into the future by three local companies.

The new jets are part of the Federal Government’s investment in the base, which will be the first part of a new permanent squadron that are set to replace the F/A-18A/B Classic Hornets. The Hornets had been used at the base since 1988.

“The F-35A-equipped 75 Squadron will capitalise on frequent opportunities to bolster interoperability with US rotational aircraft deployments, and other Enhanced Air Cooperation activities that will take place in the Top End as announced at this year’s AUSMIN (Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations),” Defence Minister Peter Dutton said.

“By the time the Air Force is scheduled to declare F-35A final operational capability in December 2023, 16 of the fifth-generation multi-role fighters will be based at Tindal base, and they will be well practiced at operating with our partners in the region.”

Mr Dutton added that the No. 75 Squadron will be using the new jets in Top End due to it being a key location in national defence and regional engagement.

American aerospace company Lockheed Martin will work with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and F135 engine producer Pratt & Whitney to optimize and support at Tindal for long-term engine maintenance.

In 2020, Lockheed Martin signed a $67 million Direct Commercial Sale contract with then-Defence Minister Linda Reynolds to offer F-35 Training Support Services (TSS) for the squadrons based at Tindal. New amenities have previously been established in Tindal base, including new hangars and squadron headquarters, as well extended runways.

The Coalition Government has invested about $1.6 billion in the ADF “to deliver a potent air combat capability from the Northern Territory.”

“I’m pleased to announce that three Northern Territory companies – Fuel Calibration Services, RGM Maintenance and Territory Instruments – have joined Lockheed Martin’s global supply chain,” Mr Dutton said.

“These companies will help sustain the F-35A capability for many years, creating long-term economic benefit in the Northern Territory.”
