New date set for Rolfe murder trial

The delayed murder trial of NT Police constable Zach Rolfe will start on August 18, the Supreme Court has heard.

The trial was delayed earlier this month after the interstate prosecution team were stuck in Sydney’s COVID-19 lockdown.

However, the court heard this morning that lead prosecutor Philip Strickland will now travel to Darwin and undergo 14 days quarantine at Howard Springs in order to appear in court for the trial on August 18.

Mr Rolfe is charged with one count of murder related to the shooting death of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker in Yuendumu in November 2019.

He has indicated he intends to plead not guilty.

There were suggestions the trial could be held over until January, but Mr Rolfe’s lawyers argued against that delay.

The full court of the NT Supreme Court is also currently determining four points of law about possible defences for Mr Rolfe before the start of the trial.

The trial is expected to run for three weeks.
