The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency has denied accusations of mismanagement and says it is ready to resume criminal law services for youth clients – which it suspended in November due to an exodus of staff – amid a deadline by the Federal Government to show why its funding should not be redirected to other legal assistance organisations.
Sky News reported earlier this week that the federal Attorney-General’s Department altered funding arrangements for NAAJA, allowing the Northern Territory Government to redirect funds as a temporary measure, and NAAJA was given until today to show why the $14 million in federal money should not be redirected to the NT Legal Aid Commission or other legal assistance organisations. The federal funding, which is distributed by the NT Government, was under a five-year arrangement that was scheduled to run until June 2025.
