A man who was carrying a machete towards a vehicle which had a replica pistol on its bumper, and was parked near a package filled with an “amphetamine-type substance”, has been arrested, NT Police said.

Commander Daniel Bacon said in a statement that about 2:30am on Saturday, CCTV operators saw the 27-year-old man carrying the machete towards a vehicle parked on The Boulevard, Palmerston.

He said officers arrested the man at an unspecified location, and the machete was seized without further incident.

“Subsequently, police uncovered a replica pistol situated on the front bumper of the vehicle, which was promptly seized,” he said.

Comdr Bacon said a second, 33-year-old man, was also arrested in the area in connection to the replica pistol and an “amphetamine-type substance”.

The CCTV operator identified a package near the parked vehicle, police said, and the package was filled with an unspecified amount of “amphetamine substance”.

He said both men were arrested and charged with being armed with an offensive weapon at night, and possessing less than a traffickable quantity of a schedule 1 drug, and were bailed and will face Darwin Local Court on February 20.
