UPDATED: A 28-year-old man has been charged with driving while under the influence of amphetamine, after being involved in a collision that killed a 33-year-old man who was riding an unregistered dirt bike under the influence of alcohol, NT Police said.

On Friday morning Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said in a statement the Major Crash Investigation Unit was investigating the crash that happened about 6:30pm Thursday, where the motorbike collided with a sedan at the intersection of Bonson Terrace and De Mestre Circuit, and the 33-year-old rider was thrown from his unregistered dirt bike.

On Friday afternoon he issued another statement saying the 28-year-old male driver returned a presumptive roadside drug test for amphetamine and a sample of his blood would be subjected to forensic toxicological analysis.

He said the man was charged with driving under influence of drugs, driving a motor vehicle while unlicensed, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, and has been issued a notice to appear in court on October 16.

“Further investigation and forensic crash analysis by Major Crash detectives, in consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions, will determine whether additional charges are laid against the driver,” he said.

Snr Sgt Lindner said residents had performed first aid on the motorbike rider until paramedics arrived, however he died at the scene.

He said the car driver left the crash scene, and was found police in the surrounding area, while the rider was under the influence of alcohol, and that witnesses had said he was speeding and not wearing a helmet.
