There were more than 100 people fighting, some with weapons, in Wadeye on Sunday, with one man hit in the leg with a crossbow bolt, NT police said.

It follows on from a police report on Janaury 22 that three people had been hospitalised amid ongoing unrest in Wadeye over the previous two days, with up to 300 people reportedly fighting in the community with homemade weapons and vehicles.

On Monday morning Acting Commander Virginia Read said in a statement that about 6pm Sunday there were about 100 people fighting in the community, using various weapons including crossbows but the crowd dispersed when police arrived.

She said one man had a crossbow bolt in his leg and was taken to the local clinic for treatment, while another man suffered a fractured leg which was also treated at the clinic.

Police said they were still trying to identify the offenders.

“The community needs to come together and work on solutions to these conflicts. The ongoing fighting is causing a great deal of stress for the people who call Wadeye home and is completely unnecessary,” she said.

“Police are committed to maintaining community safety and we will continue to respond to these incidents as well as working with elders, traditional owners and the community to facilitate calm.”

In the previous fighting a 26-year-old man was taken to the health clinic after he was hit with a window louvre, while an 18-year-old woman was also taken to the clinic after being hit in the chest with an “unknown object”, police said.

Police had said the crowds had dispersed on both that Saturday and Sunday but another “disturbance” occurred again on the Monday morning around 3am, when a 19-year-old man was hit in the upper leg with an arrow and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.

Last month, another man was shot with a compound bow but no arrests had been made.

Fighting in Wadeye has been ongoing for some time, with the issue resulting in destruction to housing, and which also saw one man killed in April 2022.

In Budget Estimates in June 2022, it was revealed 545 people in Wadeye had been displaced by the violence with damage understood to involve more than 120 homes in the community, with an estimated total repair bill of $5 million, after ongoing fighting in the community.
