The number of Territorians sleeping rough across Darwin has increased since the Finocchiaro CLP Government closed the largest homeless shelter in the region, the Opposition says, calling on the government to immediately establish a new short-stay facility in Darwin and engage with the Commonwealth to fund it.
The Yilli Short Stay Accommodation (YiSSA) facility was closed last month with only 23 of the hundreds living at the shelter moved to Batchelor as part of the government’s $20 million relocation plan. Mission Australia, which runs the now Batchelor-based facility said last month it had “lost contact” with some residents during the move.
