Two more police officers were allegedly assaulted over the weekend in separate incidents in Alice Springs, including an incident where an officer was spat on by a 23-year-old man who had been blocked from purchasing booze and another involving a man sleeping on a trampoline, NT Police said.

In the first incident, police said a 23-year-old man who was allegedly intoxicated was blocked from buying alcohol when he spat at a police member on Saturday night at an East Side supermarket.

The man refused to leave the area and continued to act aggressively toward the auxillary liquor inspector and was arrested by police officers and charged with one count of assaulting police.

The other incident involved police waking a 27-year-old man who was sleeping on a trampoline at a Larapinta home while attempting to arrest him for a previous assault. Police said he woke up and allegedly punched an officer before throwing a jerry can and charging at another officer.

“Officers arrested the man, who was taken to the Alice Springs Watch house where he was charged with one count each of assault police, fail to furnish name and address and assault,” said Acting Superintendent Rob Engels.

“This is disgraceful targeted violence directed towards our people and it will not be tolerated. Our job is to keep the community safe, we are not there to be punching bags for the community.”
