Human remains believed to be those of 35-year-old Jessica Louise Stephens who went missing for more than a week in Kakadu National Park have been recovered by the NT Police on Nourlangie Rock.
The remains were located early Saturday in the search area after a large-scale search and rescue operation was launched on October 24.
Ms Stephens had been reported missing by her mother on October 18.
Police discovered her vehicle parked near Nourlangie Rock and personal items a distance from the car last week.
It was reported by the ABC last week that Ms Stephens had been receiving mental health treatment at Royal Darwin Hospital, after travelling to the NT from her home in the Whitsundays, Queensland and had been discharged earlier in the month.
The search for her began on Tuesday morning last week, involving 22 Kakadu rangers and 10 police officers using two and four-wheel motorbikes, and two helicopters. It was not explained why the search began nearly a week after she was first reported missing.
Temperatures in the area had reached highs of 48 C, with the demanding search traversing through rough terrain in Kakadu.
Police are currently preparing a report for the Coroner.
“Tonight the sun sets on our broken hearts,” Ms Stephens’ mother Karon Evans told ABC Darwin.
“Our beautiful Jess has been found. Her soul was released to the peace of the Dreamtime and heaven. The sunset tonight reminds us how brief our lives can be.
“I also want to thank all the search crew, the traditional owners of Kakadu and the police for the extensive search and eventual finding of Jess.”
