A group of hikers who activated an emergency alert near Motor Car Falls, about 97 kilometres south of Jabiru on Sunday morning after becoming lost, have been rescued, NT Police said.

Police reported that the emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) was activated around 7:45am, prompting immediate action from local police. Officers were dispatched to the area, and a helicopter from the Search and Rescue team was deployed, carrying two personnel on board.

Upon arrival, police quickly identified a vehicle parked at Motor Car Falls, registered to the individual who activated the beacon.

“The hikers activating their registered EPIRB was instrumental in the timely rescue of the hiking group,” acting Senior Sergeant Zac Winkworth said.

Three men and two women in the vicinity of the beacon activation site were located shortly after.

One of the men was suffering from heatstroke, requiring urgent medical attention, police said. He, along with a fellow hiker who assisted, was airlifted to Jabiru where they were met by St John Ambulance for further treatment.

Meanwhile, two Search and Rescue members stayed with the remaining hikers until they were safely transported back to Jabiru via helicopter.

“This is a timely reminder for people looking to go hiking or fishing in the Top End to ensure you have a registered EPIRB,” Snr Sgt Winkworth said.

“Always plan your route, check current conditions, and make sure someone is aware of your itinerary before you head out.”
