Technology glitches and legislative stuff-ups have been blamed for the delayed implementation of mandatory sentencing reforms that aim to abolish compulsory jail time minimums for assault, drug offences, and breaches of domestic violence orders, the Lawler Government has said.

The passing of the Sentencing and Other Legislation Amendment Bill in November 2022 was heralded as ushering in a new era of “smarter justice” in the Territory, abolishing a “one-size-fits-all” approach to sentencing offenders.
