A 19-year-old man who allegedly smashed his car into another car at a fast-food restaurant carpark in Palmerston early Saturday has turned himself in, NT Police said, after shouting his name while fleeing the crime scene.
Police said the incident happened at around 12:30am Saturday morning, when the man allegedly drove his silver Holden Astra into the carpark of an unnamed fast-food restaurant and into another car at speed.
Witnesses told police that he deliberately drove into the other car.
The affected car was then pushed into another vehicle in the carpark, causing more damage.
It’s unknown why the man deliberately smashed into the other vehicle or if the parties involved were known to each other.
“There were multiple people in and around the two impacted cars. Luckily nobody suffered serious injuries,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Cottier said.
Sgt Cottier said the offender identified himself by shouting his own name as he left the premises.
“After evading police, he subsequently handed himself in,” he said.
He did not elaborate on whether police actively searched for the man while he was in hiding from Saturday to Tuesday.
“This young man’s behaviour was reckless and unacceptable. Police will not tolerate lives being put in danger like this,” Sgt Cottier said.
He added that he believes there were more “victims” during the incident and urged them to come forward and make a statement.
He however did not name identify the address of the fast-food establishment.
“We are also asking the driver of a white SUV that was in the carpark at the time of the incident to contact us,” Sgt Cottier said.
The 19-year-old man faces multiple charges including five counts of recklessly endangering serious harm – aggravated, two counts of damage to property, driving a motor vehicle while unlicensed and in a manner dangerous, not stopping after a crash, and failing to report a crash.
There was no mention if the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the incident happened.
He is set to appear at the Darwin Local Court on February 1, 2022.
Police urged anyone with information related to the incident to contact them on 131 444 and quote reference number 9901363.
