A man has been killed after being hit by a car during a fight at Timber Creek overnight, while two other people were flown to Royal Darwin Hospital in serious conditions with stab wounds, NT Police said.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said that about 8:50pm Monday police were told that a large group of people, some allegedly armed with “edged weapons”, were fighting along the Victoria Highway at the remote community, about 600km by road southwest of Darwin.

“During the incident it is alleged that an unknown male entered a vehicle and began driving dangerously through the area before striking and killing a 27-year-old male in the process,” Mr Wilton said.

“A 16-year-old boy and 65-year-old woman were allegedly assaulted with an “edged weapon”, and sustained serious injuries, while a 24-year-old male was also assaulted, resulting in minor injuries.”

Mr Wilton said the boy and the woman were flown to Royal Darwin Hospital by Care Flight, and he said extra police from Katherine deployed along with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, Northern Investigations section, and Major Crime detectives.

Police did not say how man people were fighting on the highway or why it started.

The Victoria Highway is expected to remain closed in both directions for the remainder of Tuesday, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
