Man finds, brings home unexploded WWII explosive

A Berry Springs man who found an unexploded WWII bomb in the Manton Dam area on Monday took home the explosive, forcing bomb experts to attend his home to detonate the device in a nearby block of land.

Police said the man called them to inform them of the 25-pound explosive that he had discovered in the Manton Dam area and had transported back to his Berry Springs residence.

Police immediately attended the man’s residence where they determined that the explosive artillery round used in WWII was “unsafe to travel long distances”.

“A nearby block of land was cordoned off and the device was safely detonated,” Supt Shuan Gill said in a statement.

Supt Gill added that the public should never move any unexploded devices they might come across.

“If the public ever come across or have any suspicions about military ordinance, it’s important not to move them and call the police immediately,” he said.

“Instead of moving the device, mark the exact location and contact authorities who will attend and safely remove the item.”
