A 36-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of his partner in Katherine on Monday night, NT Police said.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said in a statement that as well as murder, the man was charged with one count of aggravated assault for an alleged separate historic attack on the 22-year-old woman.

He has been further remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on Thursday.

Police previously said that at about 9:10pm on Monday, officers responded to reports of a distressed man on O’Shea Terrace in Katherine and found the woman nearby. Despite efforts to perform CPR, she was pronounced dead by St John Ambulance paramedics shortly after.
