A 56-year-old man has been charged with murder over the stabbing death of his partner in Darwin on Friday night, NT Police said.

NT Police acting media manager Elle Arnold said in a statement the man was charged over the death of the un-named 51-year-old woman outside the Doubletree Hilton Darwin Esplanade hotel in the city.

She said the woman was stabbed just before 6pm, and she walked into the hotel seeking help, was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and died shortly after.

Ms Arnold alleged CCTV operators were able to direct police to the man, who was still in the area, and he was arrested, and was charged with murder.

The man will appear before court on Monday, she said.
