Man charged over death of cyclist in Alice Springs, allegedly hid meth near crash site

A 30-year-old man who allegedly killed a cyclist in a fatal crash over the weekend in Alice Springs was allegedly high on meth at the time and hid his stash near the crash site, NT Police said.

The man was today charged with dangerous driving causing death, as well as three drug related offences including supplying and possessing a trafickable quantity of a dangerous drug and driving with methamphetamine in his body.

NT Police said they located an amount of drugs in close proximity of the crash site. They allege that the man hid the drugs in the location immediately after the crash.

Police said the drugs seized will be forensically tested.

The 57-year-old cyclist was participating in an Alice Springs Cycling Club event on Saturday when he was struck by the car at around 8.20am on Darken Drive, Simpson Gap.

The death has devastated the local cycling and wider community. The cyclist has been identified as Steve Yates, a father of two teen girls and an Alice Springs IT worker.

Major Crash and local detectives said they have obtained multiple witness accounts of the incident, while the driver was interviewed while in custody on Sunday.

NT police said the driver was refused bail and was due to appear in the Alice Springs Local Court today to face multiple charges including dangerous driving causing death, supplying schedule 1 dangerous drug, possessing schedule 1 dangerous drug – traffickable quantity, and driving with a prohibited drug in body.

NT Police are calling for people who recorded footage of the cycling event from Alice Springs to Simpsons Gap on Saturday morning to contact them.

“Anyone who recorded footage while riding in the cycling event or has dashcam or other footage, is urged to contact police on 131444 and quote ref 9581096,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.
