A man has been charged for hitting another man in the neck with a bottle in a bar in Darwin on Friday night, NT Police said.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said in a statement that about 10:45pm Friday a fight broke out between two men who knew each other in a licenced premises on Smith Street in Darwin city, with one man allegedly hitting the other with a bottle.

Mr Wilton said the 28-year-old alleged attacker was escorted from the premises and ran away but was found a short time later by police, charged with unspecified offences, and bailed to appear in court at a later date.

The victim had cuts to his neck and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.

Police are asking anyone who saw the attack to call them on 131 444, or make an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
