A man has been charged for allegedly raping a woman he knew at East Point last Monday, NT Police said.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said in a statement that police received a report last Thursday from a woman, that she was allegedly sexually and physically assaulted at unspecified time last Monday by a man she knew, near Lake Alexander at East Point.

Mr Wilton said the Sex Crimes Unit investigated, and a 42-year-old man was charged with sexual intercourse without consent, aggravated assault and depravation of liberty.

He did not say when the man was arrested or charged but said the man was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on Monday.

NT Police had not informed the public about the alleged attack until the charges were made public late Monday afternoon.
