A man has been charged by NT Police in connection with the fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 21-year-old male on Thursday night near Ngukurr.

The 26-year-old man was charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death and a single count of hit and run causing death and is scheduled to appear in Numbulwar Local Court on February 1.

“Major Crash detectives, assisted by local police, travelled from Ngukurr to Numbulwar to locate the driver and other witnesses,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.

“Assistance from members of both communities led to the alleged driver attending the local police station where he was formally spoken to by detectives.”

Police earlier investigated the incident after receiving a report of a single-vehicle crash on the Roper Highway, near the Roper Bar Crossing around 10:30 pm.

Upon responding to the call, police and rescue personnel located the 21-year-old male dead at the scene.

Initial investigations by Major Crash detectives from Darwin and police officers from Alyangula revealed the vehicle as a blue Toyota Landcruiser and it was likely that alcohol was involved.
