Another stolen vehicle used to ram police in Alice Springs over weekend

One teen is in custody and police are calling for the public to help identify other occupants of a stolen Toyota Hilux ute that was driven dangerously around Alice Springs before being used to smash into an unmarked police car twice, and another vehicle, while youths were in the tray of the ute.

It’s the third instance of a stolen vehicle being used to attack police cars in two weeks.

At roughly 12:35am on Saturday, a white Toyota Hilux was stolen from Elder Street and was seen driving dangerously through the CBD before smashing into the unmarked police car and a civilian vehicle on Bath Street around 1:15am, NT Police said.

No injuries were reported and four passengers were seen exiting the ute and fleeing on foot around 2am, after the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a roundabout, police said, making the vehicle un-driveable.

Police said they were tracking the ute, presumably by drone, and arrested the 19-year-old driver shortly after the rampage.

Police are calling for any witnesses to contact them to help identify the other alleged offenders.

“This behaviour is absolutely disgraceful and could have resulted in serious harm or death to members of the public or police officers,” said Acting Commander Kirsten Engels.

“I urge anyone with information who could help us find the other occupants of the stolen vehicle to contact Police on 131 444 or you can report anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
