A 47-year-old man who allegedly attempted to smuggle more than six kilograms of cannabis into the NT inside a hidden compartment of his car has been arrested and charged in Alice Springs, NT Police said.

Police executed a search warrant on the man’s car and allegedly found the drugs, valued at more than $100,000, in a custom built compartment under the vehicle.

Police did not say on what grounds they accessed the warrant or the details of why and when the vehicle was searched.

A statement said police also alleged the man was found with “a large sum of cash”.

The lack of details were unusual for a major drug bust.

“The man was arrested and taken to the Alice Springs Watch House where he was charged with one count of Possession of a schedule 2 drug – Commercial quantity and one count of Supply Schedule 2 Drug – Commercial quantity,” NT Police media manager Rob Cross said.

“The man has been bailed to appear before court on 6 July, 2022.”
