A man who allegedly drove a car onto curb in the Alice Springs CBD in an attempt to hit a woman, and who almost hit other pedestrians on a footpath before he crashed, has been charged, NT Police said.
Police director of communications Mark Wilton said that about 2pm Monday police were told that a white Holden Commodore mounted the curb on Todd Street near the intersection of Gregory St in the city, in an attempt to hit a woman on the footpath.
“It is alleged the male driver nearly hit other pedestrians in the vicinity before it crashed. It is alleged he self-extracted from the vehicle and chased the victim before police arrival,” Mr Wilton said.
He said the Southern Domestic Violence Unit arrested a 39-year-old man at a home about 4:45pm Monday, alleging he became violent toward police throughout the arrest and attempted to resist being arrested.
He has since been charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering serious harm, engaging in conduct contravening a domestic violence order, assaulting police, and resisting arrest.
The man was remanded to appear in Alice Springs Local Court today.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or who have information, to call them on 131 444, or make an anonymous report by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
