Labor’s current situation (demise) is the legacy of Gunner, Neve and their surrogates – who wasted millions (billions?) on Mickey Mouse projects (apologies to Walt Disney) and spent taxpayers’ money on the Labor Party’s 2020 election campaign. Their annihilation in 2024 was predictable and thoroughly deserved. This happens in politics when incompetence and private interests prevail over the public interest. Legacy – a small caucus of modest capability. Ed Smelt is an intelligent, ethical hard working local member. His primary focus must, of course, be on representing his constituents and retaining Nightcliff – as opposed to operating as Labor’s de facto leader in greater Darwin. After Giles and the CLP were slaughtered in 2016, his successor as leader, Gary Higgins, took the simple step of apologising for what the Giles CLP government did to Territorians. Not necessarily a great moment in NT politics – but an essential first step towards rehabilitation in the public eye. Selena Uibo might contemplate replicating then opposition leader Higgins.Ed Smelt is a very good local member and may well be leader of the Labor party one day.
The Labor party across Australia are doing the same…factional interests and party heavy weights giving the nod to heir-apparent nominees, without consulting with party members. It’s insulting to the grass roots members who they ultimately rely on for door knocking, fundraising, phone banks and handing out how to vote cards, and is already showing how detrimental an approach in multiple branches in Victoria. Are the Uibo group also failing to listen to the masses?
Dheran spends his time out bush anyway.
