Timor-Leste’s national carrier, Aero Dili, has launched its first-ever direct service to Australia, with the first flight touching down in Darwin on Sunday morning.

The Finocchiaro CLP Government said in a statement that it will “continue backing new air links” but did not disclose how much money it is providing the airline for the new route.

Timor Leste President and Nobel Peace Prize winner José Ramos-Horta, and Trade, Business, and Asian Relations Minister Robyn Cahill, were among the passengers on the inaugural flight.

“The first Aero Dili route from Dili to Darwin is more than a flight route. It is a bridge of friendship, commerce, education and people-to-people connection across the Timor Sea,” Mr Ramos-Horta said.

The service will operate on Sundays and Tuesdays utilising Airbus A320 and A319 aircraft, which can accommodate up to 156 and 124 passengers.

The route also plays a vital role in connecting Australia to Aero Dili’s broader network, which includes destinations like Singapore, Malaysia, and China.

“Years ago, Timor Leste was a great destination for Australian travellers for everybody including people with money to backpackers, and we hope that will restart,” Mr Ramos-Horta said. “We have significant trade relations between China and Indonesia, and Australia’s third, but with oil and gas, a lot more Australian businesses will be coming in and out.”

Ms Cahill said Aero Dili’s decision to choose Darwin bolsters the NT’s role as a gateway between Australia and the region.

“As one of our closest neighbours, Timor-Leste is an increasingly important trade, investment and strategic partner. This new service will strengthen business links, support tourism and workforce mobility, and give Territorians more choice to travel, trade and invest with our neighbours.”

Aero Dili’s president and CEO, Lourenco De Oliveira, said the inaugural flight marks a significant and historic achievement for the airline, as it broadens its international network by establishing a direct connection between Timor-Leste and Australia for the very first time.

“Darwin is a natural partner for Timor-Leste. The close geographic proximity, strong people-to-people connections and growing economic relationship make this an important route for both countries,” Mr De Oliveira said.

“We are excited to provide new travel opportunities for passengers, support tourism and business growth, and further strengthen the friendship between Timor-Leste and Australia.”

Ms Cahill also said that Timor-Leste shares a rich history and strong connections with its neighbouring nation, including health collaborations, regional trade, and educational ties.

As one of Asia’s youngest countries and a new ASEAN member, Timor-Leste is focusing on building international relationships to bolster its economic growth, and the Territory is proud to be part of that story, she said.

For reasons not explained, Ms Cahill was charged for the flight to Darwin. The government said the estimated expense for Ms Cahill to fly was $2,200, with final costs to be disclosed after the trip.
