Labor’s Yiwarr McGrath has defeated independent candidate Andrew Blamey to win the Mulka by-election Saturday night, bringing the party’s total number of MLAs in NT Parliament to six after the 2024 election wipeout saw it reduced to just four bush members, but the new member enters a divided Labor parliamentary caucus.

Mr McGrath, a registered nurse and former NT Young Australian of the Year, won 1,865 votes as of 9pm Saturday night when counting stopped, a massive lead over the 541 votes Mr Blamey received. There are less than 200 postal and declaration votes still to be counted, the NT Electoral Commission said, with the result to be made official on September 25.

  1. I’m personally very keen to watch this young man, He may not understand the power he can exercise and the tactical advantage he can wield in his positioning! Let’s hope he is not a aJacinta Price, let’s put faith in this man educating and changing mindsets so that his culture lives on and not in fear or on bended knee!
I know him not, he stood as a candidate and lm sure his supporters did not select him based on his lineage, l trust they saw a future leader to guide them out if the cesspool of tiday
