Darwin Mayor Kon Vatskalis says council is not holding any family Easter events this weekend because the holiday has fallen too early this year and it wasn’t worth organising anything because “we live in the tropics”.
“We don’t do anything because you know we’re trying to organise something but with the monsoon coming in and watching the [Bureau of Meteorology] all the time, what am I going to do if it’s wet? It wasted money,” he told Mix 104.9.
“I like it … I’d love it to be a bit later. The Greek Easter now is on the fifth of May.
“So it’s a year, it’s very early March. It is everybody who goes out tells me, ‘are you going camping’? I said ‘no, why’? ‘Don’t bother, it’s wet’. There are some areas that are really good and some people will do it. Well done guys. You’re pioneers and adventurous but it is still wet, wet with, look at Borroloola.”
Mr Vatskalis then said there were displaced people from the Borroloola floods in Darwin. It was unclear how that affected council’s Easter activity plans.
“They want to go back and other communities the same. So, it’s, we live in the tropics – remember that guys,” he said.
The City of Palmerston meanwhile has a series of events and activities planned for the Easter long weekend, including free movies, an Easter egg hunt and visits from the Easter Bunny.
The Darwin Waterfront and Casuarina Square shopping centre will also be holding Easter egg hunts, while other private businesses will also be offering different Easter-themed events over the weekend.
Mr Vatskalis sent Darwin citizens his Easter love instead of any events.
“My best wishes to all of you for a great Easter,” he told Mix. “Enjoy with your family. Stay safe. Don’t do things you shouldn’t be doing like drink driving and everything else. Your family loves you and we love you.”

We do not have a apolitical government, we have a bunch of very political clubs that comprise of dead wood furniture that will never leave the gravy train.
Is this the thin edge of the wedge on all things Christian, Kon? If it’s not a good weekend for families to go camping then it’s a perfect weekend for all those events as the families will all be in town.
