‘It’s been a nightmare’: Overwhelming response to $200 Tourism Vouchers crashes website

Thousands of Territorians have been left frustrated after an overwhelming response to the NT Government’s $200 Tourism Vouchers crashed the website.

Registration for the government’s second round of coveted vouchers opened at 8pm last night – hours earlier than the first round – but the rush of punters quickly saw the government’s website head into a tailspin.

Vouchers in the first round, earlier in the year, were swept up in mere hours, and reportedly injected more than $9.6 million into the COVID-19-battered economy.

Almost immediately, Territorians faced difficulties in registering, sparking more than one hundred messages on the Tourism NT Facebook page.

Territorians were faced with a ‘Hold tight’ message as they attempted to get a tourism voucher.

“It’s been a nightmare. I probably filled out details 10 times – crashed – finally just had success,” one person commented four hours after registrations opened.

3.5 hours and no luck. Yet I’m reading some people have had no issues going in and registering their entire families. Yet my end constantly crashes, page won’t load or Tourism NT message,” was another.

“Been trying for four hours, even got as far as entering all my details and hitting submit, then nothing… this sucks and I don’t know why I even bothered. Maybe people that got them in the last release should be put on a wait list and others who missed out get a chance to register first. Just an idea.”

One Territorian said that after giving up last night, this morning’s attempt has progressed him to a waiting list.

“Finally get on this morning, after three hours of wasting time, just like most of the NT. It says with it’s 70 per cent full but thanks for registering for the wait list. First in best dressed, Boundless Possible,” he said.

At 10.40pm last night, Tourism NT issued a caution to their social media sites, stating registrations had reached 70 per cent.

“The website can only handle a certain quantity of people at any one time, so we ask for your patience.

“Remember, if you miss out, you can still register on the waitlist.”

All 12,000 vouchers have been registered for, but according to a Government statement released yesterday, if unused within 14 days will reenter a pool.

“To ensure as many Territorians as possible have their chance to secure a voucher, once a voucher is issued it must be redeemed within 14 days (down from 30 in round 1). Unredeemed vouchers will be returned to the pool and be re-issued to the next person on the waitlist,” the statement said.
