Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby has publicly announced she directly appointed Catherine Voumard as the new director of Legal Aid NT despite an independent selection panel not interviewing her for the role and recommending someone with management experience, while a high-level source in the organisation said the unilateral decision has upset the board and showed a lack of knowledge on the part of the Minister.
Ms Boothby said at a Law Week event in Darwin on Tuesday night that Ms Voumard would begin the role on June 30, despite the controversy, adding that from the 2025-26 financial year the beleaguered organisation would receive an extra $5.5 million in funding, which she said represented an 80 per cent increase to previous baseline funding.
