The High Court has ruled in favour of native title holders, ordering mining giant Glencore to halt the expansion of port facilities on the Gulf of Carpentaria about 700 km southeast of Darwin.

The ruling found the dredging project is located in a zone covered by provisions in the Native Title Act that gives McArthur River area titleholders the right to oppose developments. It has also directed the NT Government to withdraw a minerals lease granted in 2013 that allowed the dredging area to be enlarged.
