Proposed reforms to vehicle inspection regulations in the NT were rushed and will pose financial and safety risks to Territorians, the Motor Trade Association has warned, including the potential for people to be “ripped off by dodgy private vehicle sellers”.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government announced that effective January 5, 2026, light vehicles less than 10 years old will no longer require periodic roadworthy inspections and will only be required for vehicles over 10 years old when transferring ownership, when re-establishing registration after a lapse of more than 12 months, and when first registering a vehicle in the Territory.
