The Lawler government allocated $19.2 million for upgrades of the centre in May’s budget, which was pitched as ensuring Darwin could host more major events, but basketball insiders have told the NT Independent it was primarily about upgrading the now financially embarrassed former NBL1 North league team the Darwin Salties, to the top tier of competition.
