Government refuses to put crime bills before legislation scrutiny committee

The Finocchiaro Government prevented its crime legislation from being referred to the newly re-established Legislation Scrutiny Committee, instead resolving to have its five amendment bills dealt with on urgency over the next two weeks despite some members telling the Assembly they had only seen one of the five amendment bills.

The Opposition called on the government to balance the Legislation Scrutiny Committee by having three government and three non-government members and failed in its attempt to suspend standing orders to debate the idea.

  1. This was a mandate from the citizens of the NT, these policies were announced before the election. Therefore push them through and don’t wait for scrutiny, should tweaking of the policies be required, that can be addressed later.

  2. People voted for change. Failing that many people view the future of the NT as uncertain.

  3. And why would they, won in a landslide because they took these policies to the electors.
Uibo and her Numbies can Sit Down and Shut Up.

  4. We’ve barely survived 8yrs of political diatribes intermingled with countless reviews, panels, investigations etc. that eventually lead only to a predetermined bad policy. People are sick and tired of that sort of inertia, especially when outcomes are so bad, and predictably so.
For the most part, the CLP is simply rolling back the catastrophic Labor policies of the past 8yrs. Good on you Lia.

  5. The NT voted to curb crime. From what I understand, there is little evidence that these amendments will do that – they are populist policies, playing to the genuine fear and frustrations of voters. What the NT needs and voted for is changes that will actually work. The non-CLP MLAs are saying is that they haven’t seen evidence that these changes will help anyone. Our crime problem won’t be solved by just toughening up a few rules. Yes there are terrible crimes being committed, yes the community deserves to be safe,
but the evidence suggests that some of these changes will make things worse. This is why they should be scrutinised by our parliament, not shoved through unseen. We need to invest in areas that prevent people turning to crime.
