Government House opens gates to Territorians this weekend

Territorians can explore the historic state rooms and stroll the gardens of Government House today and tomorrow as the iconic estate opens its doors in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this month.

Vicki O’Halloran, Administrator of the Northern Territory and representative of the Crown in the right of the Northern Territory, said the opportunity to welcome people to Government House is something she and her husband Craig O’Halloran “value greatly”.

“People often come to Government House for special events and are reserved to one room or area; annual Open Days allow people to explore the beautiful House and gardens at their leisure and take in the history at their own pace,” Ms O’Halloran said.

For this weekend, visitors can take a look at the historic State Rooms and stroll the majestic gardens at their leisure with Government House staff and horticulturists present to guide and answer questions about the house’s history and former residents over the last 151 years.

Guests can also view memorabilia from Her Majesty and royal visitors on display.

Aside from exploring the estate, visitors will also learn about the work of the charities and community groups through the use of interactive stalls and activities, learn flag-raising techniques, and enjoy a sausage sizzle with Scouts NT.

“Her Majesty has always held a strong connection with the people of the Northern Territory, so it is wonderful to host our Open Days this year in her Platinum Jubilee month. The Queen’s Bedroom, named after Her Majesty’s overnight stay in 1982, is always a highlight for people, and we will have the visitor’s books she signed on display,” Ms O’Halloran said.

This weekend’s entertainment includes live music, family activities with Fairy Jill, and Corrugated Iron Youth Arts and an AFLNT exhibit.

The gate opens today from 3:00 until 6:00 in the evening and tomorrow, between 10.00 am to 2.00 pm. Entry is free, and no registration is required.
