NT Fire Services personnel were spread thin responding to more than a hundred incidents during Cracker Night, including an incident where crews had fireworks allegedly shot at them.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer said duty crews with the help of volunteers worked non-stop to protect properties and ensure that no structures were damaged or destroyed during the night.
“[The] majority of the public were well behaved however, it was disappointing to see that some of our firefighters had to deal with people acting irresponsibly with fireworks,” he said.
“There were instances reported of fireworks being let off in the direction of firefighting vehicles while crews were attending to incidents and from high-rise building balconies.”
Among the notable incidents attended by the NT Fire and Rescue Service included wildfires in the Buffalo Creek area, Lee Point Rd and Nemarluk Drive, Ludmilla; multiple wildfires throughout Palmerston; a structure fire at Sedge Circuit, Karama and Smith Street, Larrakeyah; and a serious crash in Winnellie.
Mr Fischer said that it is now illegal to light any unspent fireworks.
“The public is also reminded, that while you may legally possess fireworks until Monday 4 July, it is now illegal to light any unspent fireworks,” he said.
Police had also made patrols at the Mindil Beach event, which drew large crowds, and reported no injuries or significant incidents.
