An 80-year-old elderly woman has been assaulted in her apartment in Bellamack by a group of masked burglars who are believed to be male teenagers, NT Police said.
Police are appealing for witnesses of the unlawful entry at a unit complex on Flynn Circuit, Bellamack around 12:45am, Wednesday to come forward with any information that could lead to the identity of the assailants.
“Police received a report this morning that a group of male offenders had smashed through a glass door of the unit and attempted to steal the victim’s handbag,” Northern Territory Police Watch Commander Siiri Tennosaar told the ABC News’ Breakfast show.
“The victim was woken by the commotion and was pushed to the ground by one offender as they fled the location,” Cmdr Tennosaar added.
The elderly woman’s handbag that contained cash and cigarettes were stolen. It was not disclosed how much money was in the bag.
Cmdr Tennosaar said the victim did not suffer any injuries, but was left shaken.
She said the offenders had their faces covered but are believed to be male teenagers or young adults.
It’s not known if a surveillance camera has captured any of the invader’s activity within the perimeter.
Authorities continue with their investigation.
The NT Police urges anyone who observed suspicious activity in the area to contact police at 131 444 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting reference number 9356335.
