Thirteen people in Borroloola have been charged for alcohol and drug-related offenses following an NT Police traffic crackdown over the rodeo weekend, police say.

Police conducted around 300 roadside breath tests and drug saliva tests to motorists over a four-day period, resulting in a number of charges relating to drink and drug drivers including driving with prohibited drug in blood, possession of cannabis, driving while disqualified, driving unlicensed, and breach of bail, Officer-in-Charge, Sergeant Cherie Gaffney said.

“It was disappointing to see a number of drink and drug drivers on our roads over the rodeo weekend,” Sgt Gaffney said.

The Borroloola Rodeo had been postponed in August due to escalated tensions in the community following an incident where a local family was allegedly chased and shot at on the Carpentaria Highway.

The sale of takeaway alcohol to Borroloola residents and Mara Camp residents was restricted to canned beer only with an alcohol content of not more than 3.5 per cent, and limited to 18 cans per person per day, according to the Health department.

Two weeks ago, four people, aged 29 to 40-years-old, in Borroloola were arrested and charged for drink driving and traffic related offences, as well as bringing grog into an alcohol-protected area.

They were charged with high range drink driving, bringing alcohol into alcohol protected area, and other traffic-related offenses.

Sgt Gaffney said most people over the rodeo weekend were well behaved.

“Borroloola Police want to thank our safe road users who participated in our traffic campaign for their cooperation and contribution in making the 2020 Borroloola Rodeo a family friendly event,” she said.
