Several reports of recent drink spiking incidents within the Darwin entertainment precinct have sparked an NT Police investigation, with police pledging to work with bars to identify “suspicious behaviour”, while calling for further victims to come forward.
Police said the incidents occurred late last month, but did not provide specific establishments where they are alleged to have occurred. It was also unclear how many reports police received. Details of the specific alleged offences were not provided.
“While reports of drink spiking remain relatively uncommon, it is a serious offence, and we want the community to know that any report will be thoroughly investigated,” said Acting Senior Sergeant Peter Cousins.
“We want to stress the responsibility of this behaviour remains solely with the offender and encourage any victim to come forward and make a report.
“Territorians should be able to enjoy a night out with friends or family without their safety being at risk by this appalling behaviour.”
Acting Snr Sgt Cousins added that police are working “closely with licensed venues to identify suspicious behaviour and ensure patrons can safely enjoy Darwin’s entertainment precinct”.
He also recommended those visiting licenced establishments to remain “vigilant and keep an eye on their friends and those around them”.
Symptoms of drink spiking can include dizziness, loss of coordination, unusual drowsiness, nausea, memory loss, or unusual behaviour, regardless of alcohol consumption, police said.
“Anyone who believes they have been a victim of, or has witnessed, a possible drink spiking incident or suspicious behaviour, is urged to contact police and seek medical assistance as soon as possible,” Snr Sgt Cousins said.
“You can make a police report by calling 131 444 or report anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via https://crimestoppersnt.com.au. In an emergency, dial Triple Zero.”
