Advocacy group Deaf Connect is campaigning to preserve federal government funding for the only daily news service in Australian Sign Language, which is set to expire at the end of June.
Deaf Connect chief executive officer Brett Casey said his organisation had received numerous testimonials from deaf Darwin residents who value the program’s coverage of vital issues since its introduction in September 2024.
Mr Casey said Auslan90 has reached more than 300,000 Australians and produced more than 400 news bulletins.
“Across the country, deaf Australians have told us what would be lost if Auslan90 disappears,” Mr Casey said.
“Auslan90 keeps our community safe and informed – guiding us through global conflicts, cyclones, school closures, elections, and much more.
“News in your first language is a lifeline. But at a time when people are turning to trusted news sources for clarity on complex global issues, deaf Australians risk being excluded entirely.”
Mr Casey said Deaf Connect, in collaboration with SBS, offers the Auslan90 program, which is currently supported by funding from the federal Health, Disability and Ageing Department. He said the organisation is also seeking bipartisan support to ensure the program continues.
Darwin resident Brenda Leeson said Auslan90 helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of the deaf community, particularly during emergencies and natural disasters.
“Auslan has been my first language all my life. Being deaf, I often rely on Auslan90 to stay informed because it gives me access that other news sources don’t provide,” Ms Leeson said.
“Without Auslan90, our community would be left in the dark during critical events. Auslan90 isn’t just news, it’s a lifeline that keeps the deaf community, and the wider Northern Territory community, safe and informed.”
Mr Casey said Deaf Connect is compiling testimonials from community members into a dedicated YouTube playlist and has created a resource pack for individuals and organisations wishing to express their support.
Deaf Connect is a national not-for-profit organisation that supports Deaf Australians and Auslan users.
