Darwin’s aging Kahlin Oval to undergo $2 million structural upgrades

The NT Government is investing $2 million in upgrades to the historic Kahlin Oval in the Larrakeyah suburb of Darwin, including clubhouse structural roof repairs, dedicated female change rooms, improved disability access, and “enhanced security” in an effort to boost the growth of women’s and junior cricket in the city.

The funding allocated to the City of Darwin for the project will enable the Darwin Cricket Club, which has operated at the site since 1977, to access modern, safe, and high-quality facilities that cater to the needs of a growing and diverse sporting community, the government said.

NT Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey said the investment offers significant advantages for both the community and strategic objectives of the sport..

“NT Cricket welcomes today’s funding announcement for Kahlin Oval, one of Australia’s most picturesque cricket grounds,” Mr Dovey said,

“Cricket is playing an increasingly important role in the growth, development and social cohesion of the Northern Territory, and we need modern fit-for-purpose facilities to underpin that.

“These upgrades will not only be a game changer for our local cricket community, but for the first time, Kahlin Oval will be able to host elite male and female cricket content.”

Sports and Culture Minister Jinson Charls said the money was part of a CLP election commitment and is a vital step towards upgrading local community infrastructure and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to get involved.

“Kahlin Oval has a proud and rich history in Darwin, but the current facilities have simply reached the end of their useful life,” Mr Charls said.

“This $2 million investment is about ensuring our sports clubs have the right environments to stay active, engaged, and healthy.”

Darwin Cricket Club president Cameron McNally said the funding will significantly improve community sports at Kahlin Oval.

The upgrades to the pavilion aim to enhance the experience for players, volunteers, families, and visitors, accommodating the increasing participation in cricket and other sports, he said.

“As Darwin Cricket Club celebrates its 50th year, this investment will help ensure Kahlin Oval remains a thriving community sporting hub for the next 50 years.”

  1. I first joined Darwin Cricket Club in 1988. Back then, Cullen Bay was an undeveloped bay with mangroves. The king tides would wash up over the oval. No white picket fence, no club house. There was a boat ramp at the end of the road next to the practice nets.

The ground is looking great now. I still have my old DCC hat somewhere.
