The cost of Darwin’s long-delayed ship lift has surged to at least $820 million, a parliamentary committee has found, which will see taxpayers cover the costs for Paspaley Pearls Group to operate, as per an agreement signed in 2021.
The project, which was first raised by the previous CLP Government in 2015 and has never undergone a business plan, was referred to the Public Accounts Committee by Treasurer Bill Yan in May, with a report by the committee scheduled to be released next month.
