A senior doctor at a family practice in Darwin has been committed to stand trial on one count of rape and four counts of committing an act of gross indecency, the NT Independent can reveal.
Dr Mohamed Jamaldeen Hassian Ali, 72, was first arrested and charged by police for a series of sexual offences in September 2021 that they alleged occurred at Berrimah Family Practice on Vanderlin Drive.
Dr Ali has been suspended from practicing in Australia, according to the Australian Health Practioner Regulation Agency. He was registered as a general practice doctor in May 2005.
Dr Ali’s name was removed from suppression orders relating to the alleged crimes on December 22, 2022 in the Supreme Court after being committed to stand trial.
The sexual assaults are alleged to have occurred on multiple days between late August and early September 2021.
He was last in court on January 10 for a variation to his bail conditions.
Those conditions include that he surrender his Australian and Sri Lankan passport, not approach the victim, not access patient records or notes, to reside at his home address and not to leave the NT without permission from police.
He will next appear for a pre-trial mention on April 11.
Dr Ali and Berrimah Family Practice were contacted but declined to comment.
The allegations against Dr Ali have not been proven in court. The trial date has been set down for August 28.
