Planned industrial action at Darwin correctional facilities that was to see corrections officers walk off the job for 24 hours on Wednesday morning has been cancelled by the union representing officers the day before the action was set to occur, following the death in custody of a 26-year-old man at the Darwin Correctional Centre last Friday.
The United Workers Union confirmed on Tuesday the planned work stoppage will not occur, which it says was decided “out of deep respect for the family of the deceased, as well as for the wellbeing of other prisoners and officers who have been traumatised by the incident”.
