A police officer opened fire on a car driven by an alleged thief in Palmerston Saturday morning, in what the NT Police said was an attempt to stop the vehicle, but there were no injuries reported and the alleged driver was later arrested, while an internal investigation into the use of force has been launched.
The incident occurred some time after 11:20am in Bakewell, after police responded to reports a man allegedly armed with a “blunt weapon” was attempting to enter homes on Firefly Court.
NT Police said in a statement the man had allegedly “stolen a set of keys to a silver Toyota Corolla parked at a residence nearby” when he was confronted by responding officers as he attempted to flee.
“Police can confirm one officer drew their firearm and allegedly discharged two rounds during the incident in an attempt to stop the vehicle,” police media director Mark Wilton said in a statement Saturday night.
“The vehicle continued from the scene. No injuries were reported.”
Police said the car was later located abandoned in bushland off Roystonea Avenue, but did not say if they had pursued it following the officer discharging his firearm.
“A 44-year-old man was located and arrested nearby and is currently in police custody assisting with enquiries,” Mr Wilton said.
“The entire circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”
Police said the use of force was declared a “serious custody incident” and will now be subject to investigation “with oversight from the Professional Standards Command” – the police’s internal disciplinary body.
“Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 131 444,” Mr Wilton said. “Anonymous reports can be made through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via https://crimestoppersnt.com.au.”
