Cop facing five charges for alleged drunken night out in Palmerston

A 43-year-old male police officer has been suspended with pay after he was charged with disorderly behaviour, careless driving and failing to provide a breath analysis, among other offences over the weekend in Palmerston, NT Police said.

Police said in a statement Monday that the officer was off duty at the time of the alleged offending.

It is alleged he committed a number of driving offences some time on Sunday before he was arrested at “a premises on University Avenue”.

The officer was charged with careless driving, failing to provide breath for analysis, failing to leave a licensed premises, returning to a licensed premises after being excluded and disorderly behaviour in a public place.

He was bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on July 16 to answer to the charges.

Police did not release his name.

“The officer has been suspended with pay and the matter remains under investigation,” police media director Mark Wilton said in the statement.

“This update has been provided … in accordance with the NT Police Transparency Guidelines.”
