The Finocchiaro CLP Government has scrapped nearly a decade-long plan to build the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery of Australia in Alice Springs following an unusual fight with the Federal Government, but no savings are expected to be found after Treasurer Bill Yan indicated the NT Government’s contribution would still be spent on something in the town.
The announcement that the CLP will scrap the gallery was made a week after Mr Yan told the Federal Government they needed to approve his government’s downsized scope in one day or it would not go ahead, which Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said was “a pretty weird way of trying to work with the Commonwealth”, suggesting the CLP was attempting to blame the Federal Government for scrapping the project.
The CLP has never wanted to spend money on anything Indigenous, ever.
