CLP call for crime debate while Labor too busy with burials and cremations bill, as Parliament set to resume

The Opposition CLP will be prosecuting the Fyles Government for their alleged failure to adequately manage the Territory’s high crime rates when Parliament sittings resume Tuesday, while the government says it is more focused on introducing the Treaty Commission’s final report and debating a bill about burials and cremations.

“The CLP will continue to press Labor to do more to address the Territory’s crime crisis,” said Opposition Whip Josh Burgoyne. The Fyles Government can’t ignore the Territory’s crime rates which have skyrocketed since Labor took Government in 2016. Territorians need more decisive action and deserve to feel safe.”

Mr Burgoyne added that the CLP have serious concerns about the Fyles Government’s recent decision to allow intervention-era alcohol bans in remote communities to lapse.

“Labor has opened the floodgates on grog without a plan,” he said.

“In just one week since alcohol returned to communities, we’ve seen alcohol related domestic violence at levels not experienced before and increases in alcohol sales of 300 per cent, as stated by retailers.

“In Alice Springs last week, police reported 54 cases of domestic violence over a 48-hour period. A shocking number of offences that happened just days after the new changes came into effect.”

Leader of Government Business Chansey Paech said in a statement on Monday that Labor’s focus during the three-days sittings would be on the Treaty Commission’s final report, the Burial and Cremation Bill and the Building Amendment Bill which will see increased penalties for professional misconduct by building professionals.

“Our Parliamentary agenda this week is about supporting and protecting the rights of Territorians across the board, including streamlining legislation around burials, better industry safeguards, and workplace security,” Mr Paech said.

“The Territory Labor Government is working towards a fairer, more equitable future for Territorians and Bills that are being debated and introduced to Parliament this week will advance these values.”

The Burial and Cremation Bill will replace 70-year-old legislation by introducing regulation of cemeteries, protection and management of burial sites and regulations for the burial, exhumation and disposal of human remains, the government said.

Mr Burgoyne said all of Labor’s policies are failing Territorians and that the government must do more to combat the ongoing crime crisis across the Territory.

“The Fyles Government has failed Territorians and failed to keep them safe,” he said.

“The CLP will be demanding answers as to what Labor is going to do to protect Territorians and address the rapidly escalating crime crisis.

“The Labor Government’s policies clearly aren‘t working and Territorians are suffering as a result.”
